Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) 101: Basics

Course Description: Automatic transfer switches allow the loads to be fed from either the Utility or backup power sources as its most common use case. In this course we will dive into the basics of automatic transfer switches, their purpose, associated Codes and Standards, types of ATS, and typical installations. This course also touches on ATS controllers, withstand ratings, and power switching methods. The course is free of charge.
Objectives: After this course, you will be able to:
1. Explain the fundamentals of an ATS, and relevant codes & standards.
2. Specify ATS architecture, switching methods, components, and controller functionality.
3. Explain the basics of ATS current ratings and withstand and close on ratings (WCR).
